Has anyone come across a game in which a pawn is promoted to a knight to give mate?

Actually played a game? Or having seen a game?

Nice one. previous post doesn't count as whilst pawn move delivered mate it wasn't promoted.

Reason I ask, is that it is natural to promote pawn to Queen but a lesser piece might be more devasating. Not played or seen any game where this has happened apart from this one.

In the first game you have to go back a few moves to see the pawn promoted to a knight. The knight promotion was an integral move in the mate.

Thanks for this, may be my question was ambiguous. What I was looking for was the pawn prmoting to knight giving mate at the same time.

Here's one from the 1949 U.S. Open:

Do I win a prize? A really good prize? 😉

I sometimes promote to a bishop or knight if it can be taken immediately by a rook or queen and I have that square prorected. I figure they won't sac a rook/queen for a bishop/knight, but would take a queen. That's probably common though, I don't know. Haven't did it to checkmate yet though.

Here's one fo the most famous 'would-be' pawn promotions to a knight mate ever.
The variation on move starting with 18...Bd8 was seen by Tal back at move 14 ("an amusing variation" as Tal puts it), and was the main reason why he entered the piece sacrifice line.
Larsen avoided all this by playing 18...Rf7 but lost anyway.

Thanks for this example of 'what might have been'. Fascinating.
