look up the old posts for any of the gazillion times a newcomer has brought up the same topic. and while you're at it, look up threads for:
'when to resign',
'what's en passant?',
'is it possible to convert rhp ratings to elo/uscf/bcf',
'why does my rating decrease even though I just won a game?'
'what happened to ironman31?'
'which is better, a knight or a bishop?'
'was fischer/kasparov/morphy/capablanca the best player there ever was?'
just to save some time.
and to proceed right to getting better at chess, check out rahimk's 'how to get to 1400' thread. and dragon fire's excellent mating tutorials during the last couple of days.

Maybe a permanent post should be placed as the top thread, to advise newcomers of what is expected?
It makes more sense than justifying killing off people, because the system is wrong.
I actually don't think so. Before I figured out the rating specifications, I would request people similar in point value say less than 1300 to play me. Several times I had a person in the 1500+ accept the game which annoyed me to no end because I felt they picked my game just to have the pleasure of beating me. It's like dating, you have three dates to figure out if you want to play the person or not. After that you're locked in. ;-)

Not only would I stand a 50% chance of being gay, but I would also be treated like a chess piece.

There should be a penalty, possibly a one or two day ban from joining new games, then people would have to think twice before annoying innocent players!
