It is not that bad a defence really, I am sure it will make a comeback someday as there is nothing majorly wrong with it, other then white can steer you into a drawish position if he wants.
That's not the only book on it.
I'm sure there were others, but
Why Not The Philidor Defense? By Bent Larsen (variation exd4 and g6)
The Philidor: A Reappraisal By Tim Harding (dated)
Winning With The Philidor By Tony Kosten (He wrote this around the time of the first Latvian Gambit book. Much of the analysis is similar to Harding's book. There are quite a few new suggestions though, including analysis of the Philidor Countergambit. This one kind of put the Philidor back on the map.)
Then, there are two newer ones.
I assume you have the popular.
The Philidor Files By ?
I borrowed my friends copy one time. It seems pretty nice.
Maybe the author is Bauer ???
The other one is
The Philidor: A Secret Weapon By Seel
Admittedly, I don't know much about this one except that it is supposed to advocated the Antoshin Variation.

if someone said he died hundreds of years ago i was about to say. . oh these internet bios can be corrupted too easy

I kind of liked the Philidor Files, by the way. I've always been fascinated by the Hanham (Nf6,Nbd7,c6,Qc7,a6,b6,Bb7,etc), ever since studying the games of Nimzowitsch.
There is another book (and maybe even webpage) on something called the Lion. It is based on this setup vs 1.d4 and 1.e4.
Have you heard of that one?
Originally posted by paulbuchmanfromficsi saw there was a themed tournament here on the lion, but i didnt get it..it did look cool though, i should try to look it up..

I think this is the original webpage.
They had one up for years. Then they published the book and took it down. I believe this is the same (revised) page.
http://www.vanrekom.nl/thelion/indexgb.htm
The new edition of the book is titled The Black Lion.
I see that it is available for Preorder at amazon.com.
I really don't know much about it though.

Originally posted by paulbuchmanfromficsI have it. It's a repertoire book against 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 and advocates the 3. d4 exd4 variation.

Seel's analysis is of a very high standard, but it could do with some more explanation. Alot of it is just variations churned out or checked by Fritz.
If we can believe IM Seel, black has equality in every variation white tries after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 exd4, but it seems to me that there are a couple of (endgame) positions he easily dismisses as 'equal' but are probably unpleasant for black.

I helped him with his book and I play Phillidor myself, even here on the RHP site.
No problems with the endgames yet as black.
BUT: Most of my opponents so far didn't know the theorie as good as I do, so most of the time they didn't even reached an equal endgame.
