Only Chess

Clock

I remember how exciting chess was when I first learned the game

Clock

@lemondrop

It frustrated me.

Clock

I would look forward to a game or more with my father every night
I would learn various traps to play which never worked
when I began studying more and playing others chess lost its fun

I learned on my own, logging on to FICS and lost almost every game.

is the game still fun for you?

My beginning chess days were buying every chess book out there but not good enough to understand them or learn from them but I would get so drunk looking at a chess set with my collection of books close by and listening to metal music and fantasizing about my massive entrance to defend my World Chess Title which included my Challenger at the game table and the room filled with adoring fans waiting for my entrance and then after a video history of me and my chess idols the drums start and the lights go out and then the lights focus on the double doors that enter the playing hall and when the drums reach their maximum the double doors open and then I enter upon my throne which is carried by massive bodybuilding chicks who are still super sexy and obviously I would be dressed like a psychopathic king who is unbeatable at chess.

I still use that fantasy to this day after 20 years and I am only a regular 1500 who has moments of glory beating the occasional 1800.

It is not fun for me at all.
I wanted glory but I suck and always will.
Many times I quit and throw everything into the trash.

About 10 days later I buy new books and a board and start again.
It is an addiction.
I have always improved but very slowly.
About 100 rating points every 5 years.
Started at 1100
Now 1600(ish)

So even though I try to quit ...my chess mind tells me I am improving although at a slow rate.

I wanted to have an idea what to do once you develop your pieces. I also wanted to be able to beat anyone who was as bad as I was at that time.

I achieved the goal of being able to beat any typical person who rarely plays chess in the first year at some point.

I have a better idea of what I should do, but still have much to learn. At the moment I rely much on the stars aligning.

Ya it's still fun.
Slowly I improve.
I may be 2000 rated online when I am 60 in 20 years which will be worth the effort.

Forums don't help though 🤔
Beer don't help either.

@Eladar

Read "Modern Chess Strategy"

By Ludek Pachman

He explains the "why" and the "what to do" in every position.
He makes it sound so simple and when you play over the games with a board it is simple.

A more modern book is "Chess Strategy" by Adam Hunt.

The key is remembering those ideas/methods.
It is the best books for people above 1200 who can't reach 1700

Me too but they say my smoking will save me.
I want to die at the age of 64 like the greats anyways.

A few others did too.
It seems like the right time to go if you are a chess addict.
