Here's another, more interesting puzzle...

White to move and eventually mate (in more than one move)

Good question. Black must move first, but why?

legally occupy.[/b]
Don't you mean can occupy?

Otherwise, you could say c8, d8, and e8 for squares the king could not occupy...

I did not see a mate for white in two moves if white moved first...I saw one for three moves, I think...

There is a more concrete reason...think about what the previous move might have been.

c8, d8 and e8 are legal squares. Checkmate is legal, isn't it?

Oh... wouldn't they be a7, b7, and b8?

Here's a very interesting, and actually rather simple mate I found when looking at an endgame scenario...

Only solve this one if you have some time to spare! 🙂

White to move and mate in less than 20...

Oops, left that part out. There are three unoccupied squares that the Black King can not legally occupy.

1.Rc8+ Kh8 2.Rh8+! Kxh8 3.Qh6+ Kg8 4.Qxg7#

Black can prolong the agony by sacrificing his B and R, if he wishes.

Quite easy really....

march the king up, sac the pawn for 'the opisition', capture @D7, promote @D8, then Mate.

I'm not sure why you'd call this difficult. Black is obliged to stay in front of the c7 pawn, so the play is very forced.

1.Ke3 Kb7 2.Kd4 Kc8 3.Kc5 Kb7 4.Kb5 Kc8 5.Ka5! White must end up with opposition 5...Kb7 6.c8=Q+ Kxc8 7.Ka6 Kb8 8.Kb6 Ka8
(8...Kc8 9.Ka7 Kd8 10.Kb7 Ke8 11.Kc7 Kf7 12.Kxd7 Kf8 13.Kxe6 Ke8 14.Kd5 Kd7 15.e6+ Kc8 16.Kc6 Kb8 17.d7 Ka7 18.d8=Q Ka6 19.Qa8🙄
9.Kc7 Ka7 10.Kxd7 Ka6 11.Kc6 Ka5 12.d7 Kb4 13.d8=Q Kc4 14.Qd2 Kb3 15.Kc5 Ka3 16.Qb4+ Ka2 17.Kc4 Ka1 18.Kc3 Ka2 19.Qb2#

Edit 4.c8Q+?? also gives White opposition, but after 4...Kxc8 5.Kc4 Kb7 6.Kb5 Ka7, White can't make any progress.

Check out this puzzle...relatively easy but offers a moral...

White to move, mates in three...
