Game 3092220

against an opponent 350 points higher than me! I've never played against the French before. I have to say it's .. different.

Anything I could've done better?

i hate playing against the french defense but its always nice to draw someone much higher than you. when you draw someome 350 pts lower than you, you are really kicking yourself. good job.

Yeah, drawing against a higher rated opponent is awesome. Just two weeks ago I drew against someone rated 400 points higher than me(OTB game). It was a tough game and I felt great afterwards(not to mention I went up 60 points in that tournament).

My opponent is a member of the "French Defence Lovers" clan so I assume he knew it well, too!

I would have considered playing 12. Bxg6 to weaken Black's kingside and from there I would have begun an attack similar to what you did with h4, h5, etc.

After looking at the final position that you drew with, I think that Black may have had some chances to break through on the queenside by placing the Knight on c5, placing the Queen and both Rooks on the a file, and by getting the Bishop to a4 and then b3. Meanwhile could've tried sacrificing your Knight with an eventual Nxh6 and if Black captures, you could attempt a breakthrough and push for the promotion of the g pawn.

At one point I considered a Knight sac on f5 but thought better of it... I'm fairly sure I would've been outplayed. Yeah, this was tough too. There were times when I thought I was sure I was missing something (that he most certainly wasn't). That's the head game I guess playing against someone rated so much higher than you. He refused my first draw offer actually...

I'll be checking this game out against the computer shortly...

Thanks for the feedback.. How would I get the Knight in a position to capture on h6 with Blacks f-pawn? I considered, Nxf5 at on point when my Rook was on f1.

I think you might be right with the 12. Bxg6. I was concerned with the Queenside, particularly with the doubled pawn, light square weakness, and severe constriction. I chose to keep the Bishop and didn't really analyze it. I probably would've thought it about it more had he not been rated so much higher... I'll definitely analyze that line. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

after 24...f5 25. c3 the position is very drawish....

therefore it seems to make sense to assume blacks 'inaccuracy' was several moves before...but without critising the opening choice itself, i cant really spot any obvoius improvements..
