Yea, Karpov had Miles' number till he pulled out the St. George Defense. πŸ™‚

Here is a position from a game of mine that is a good example of positional chess.

Black to play and find the winning move:

wasn't this our game? it was quite tactical before as I remember, knights hopping around, forks flying left & right, and I missed some fork?

Still one of my favorites πŸ™‚. And to think that all the tactics led to the position above.

Ah... blitz guess would be
1. Rc2

That's not correct.

1...Rc2+
2.Kg3 Rxb2
3.f5

and regardless of whether or not black captures (he should) white has a passed pawn as well as the threat of Re6+ regaining the pawn. Chessmaster 10, through many different ideas I have put it through, has this endgame as drawn. Anyway, the move you gave is a tactical idea, and what we are looking for is a quieter move that diminishes white's counterplay and allows black to force an eventual victory.

It seems to me that strategy is often a general understanding, ideas that can someday amount to a win. Tactics are what you use after you get that winning position (or how to initiate a positional advantage). Or atleast that whats I've been told.

I would play Rf1. In blitz I would play Rc2+ tho.

I don't understand that statement at all.
Surely most of us firstly look for any threats, then search for the tactics & if there aren't any, improve our position that fits into a plan - ie play positionally.

I couldn't agree more.
