How long ddid it take you guys to progress your chess rank? What were the best ways of getting better?

I plan to be at least a 1500 by the end of this school year.

It took me 3 months to go from 1250 to 1500+. Though, I spend at least 2 hours on chess everyday.

I'm not sure if that's attainable. I don't have a good idea of your skill level yet, but it seems like an immense improvement.

It depend what rating you are at. Going form 0-1300 is easiest. 1300-1500 easy. I recommend you get the Winning Chess Series books by Yasser Seirwan. They will help you get to 1500.

after 1500, it takes months/years to improve.

I've been stuck on 1700 for a 1.5 years at least and i spend 2 hours at least everyday studying and playing.

1500 rhp? it took me about 3 months from starting chess, but I've been stuck on around 1550 after that... I did around 3-8h of tactics a day during that 3 months, not really anything else.

Wow, you went ALL OUT on chess, huh?

I play daily, here and on FICS, and I have read a few library books and own a couple books that I got for free. I play with freinds now and again, but they blow so I play online more.

On FICS I have a rating of about 1330ish... so I hope I will make it to 1500 soon.

1.5 years stuck at 1700 with 2 hours of playing and studying chess daily? Thats nutty, it sure it hard to progress sometimes.

Well my first provisional rating after 4 games was 1748 which is pretty high i think, I got lucky in one game. After that its started dropping to 1689 and then went up to 1728 adn now back to 1706. So basically I spent 1.5 years mainting it around 1700 i guess. I think my first ratings should have been 1600-1660 instead of 1748. My 1870 opponetn blundered in a king and pawn vs king endgame and let me get opposition and draw.

me? -I tend to obsess about things. when I code, I do nothing else. when I painted, I did it all through the night. when I did animation, the same thing. when I write, nothing else. when I take up languages, I take up 2-3 at a time, and do nothing else. since last summer I've done nothing but obsessed about chess. it's not the best way of doing things, but it's my way. I'm not a man of moderation.

I'm also only 1380 sr on FICS (wormstar there), although my RD is still high. and I think that standard rating might still sink, because my blitz is only around 1000. I still drop pieces in practically EVERY game under 15min. I guess it's part of being a newbie. doesn't really matter if I play strategically 1500+ if I drop pieces in pressure like a 1000.
