Promoting Pawn win?

Just found this game Game 3693793 and noticed the reason for the win was Promoting pawn.

The losing player could still have made a few legal moves before being checkmated so why was the game over as a win for white?

Has anyone else ever won or lost a game like this?

Perplexed and sober 😲

My only guess is that this is what happens if you move the pawn to promote, and then you disconnect before you choose which piece to promote it to.

Of course, that shouldn't count as a win...

Maybe there's a bug here

edit: Or it could be that the opponent resigned in the middle of the pawn promotion... Maybe the special "Pawn promotion" status overrides the normal "Resignation" status.

Try retracting the move and then playing it again - it does actually promote to a queen. My suspiscion is that black resigned while this promotion was taking place, and therefore only the pawn move had time to be recorded.

Yeah, I think that's what happened, too. The player may have forgotten that you have to choose what you want to promote to, then the other player came back later and realized it was over, and thus resigned.

Well I know the players and the losing player never resigned.

I have sent feedback to Russ as it is a little strange.

Perplexed? Well yes. All the time it seems.

Sober? Oh please, we all know you better than that!

Best,

And the reason for the anomaly is ....

This game timed out, but there is a glitch when showing the game status for a game awaiting a promotion. (so it appears) I'll look into this further and get a fix up in the future. Rare problem this one. (First time I have heard of it, anyway)

wow, Russ hadn't seen it?
he programmed it!
he'd have had to set some "Pawn Promotion" function...
maybe memory fails him at the moment.

Me thinks that the status message place can hold only one message at the time. If the system want to put out two messages, like "Resignation" and "pawn promotion" only one of them shows. In this case it was "Pawn Promotion". It's a rare bug.
This is what me thinks.
