Interesting Idea from a rival chess site.
Protected Ratings
Players with established ratings will have their ratings protected when playing against unrated or provisional players. A protected rating can remain the same or go up, but never go down, even when the player loses the game. We implemented rating protection because we want to encourage our members to play against newcomers and help them establish their ratings without putting their own at risk.
Originally posted by Drew LI don't mind my rating going up and down...I don't think one should lose 32 points to a 1200 P who is actually a 2000 + player just for the sake of saying a rating number.

If it is against established players and they are not (SANDBAGGING) I don't mind losing rating points, if they beat me because of a mistake I made, that is all part of the game.
Just my opinion on the topic.
Originally posted by Drew LI think a much better system would be to protect the rating of the unprovisional player until the provisional player has completed 5 games and therefore has a rating.

so, if I lose to a 1200, and that 1200 becomes 1650 at the end of 5 completed games, I my rating should be calculated as if I played against a 1650 player.
Originally posted by diskamylWhat it means is if a person with an established rating, say 1400, losses to a 1200 p then that 1400 player would not lose any points, his rating would not change. Which is even better for the established player than your suggestion.

Originally posted by diskamylThe provisional player may have a rating after 5 games, but it is not the players strenght rating yet, I would prefer 24 games, to actually have an established rating.

Originally posted by Hells CaretakerI believe all the members have stars. If they don't have a star they are not members...but they can still play in the clubs, I don't know how many games they get or how that is going to work. I don't know if anyone knows yet 😞
I agree with Rusty...especially with this club venture taking hold.BTW I'm getting many none members challenging me and its hard work finding out if they are club or just none sub casual players..
OK...I got you now I think...you got to check with that club to see if they belong ?
