I don't have a righteous chess set to myself and was wondering if someone could link me to something towards my price range...I was hoping to spend no more then $150 for the moment. I dont really have that much cash so I'd like to be a bit thrifty for my first real set.

However, I am rather particular about what is displayed in my home (hence the problem of finding something in that price range...). I would like a wood set that is weighted (how much I can't say really, just enough to be not flimsy I guess...). I don't know what it is called but I like the sets with the knight that has the head lowered and looks rather more menacing. But I don't like the split top bishops...I have seen that these two usually go together, but that may be a newbie misconception. I don't know if I want ebonized or not, I guess that all depends on the entire look. (I plan to have it displayed when not in use hence the pickiness...)

I have looked at amazon and and pretty much all of the sites that google gives you when you search 'chess.'

$150 (US) isnt really firm, but a good median I guess. (Have I used enough parenthesis during this post?) LOL.

TIA I could really use a bit o help here.

Any help would truly be appreciated really.

Try this:

http://houseofstaunton.com/prices.html

Scroll down to the bottom for the less expensive sets. None of these include boards by the way, but they also offer some relatively inexpensive boards.

I bought my set from here, and would certainly recommend them.

I concur. They are a bit pricey but their sets are top shelf... you will be hard pressed to find better quality, looks, feel, you name it.

House of Staunton & Wholesale Chess are both good for that. I got a really nice wooden set from houseofstaunton.com and a great plastic tournament set from wholesalechess.com.

or you could just try ebay.

All I can add to what has been stated above, is if you search on ebay, you will find literally thousands to chose from.

Thanks a ton. I did go through houseofstaunton but for some reason missed the prices...Don't know how that happened. Ebay does have a bunch, but I don't trust ebay for anything.

Thanks.

www.chess.ca

has very nice ones. We have the sets at our club and they are really nice.

Board is $100 and pieces are $100 and this is canadain money so $150 american should easily cover it.
