How did the black king get to that square!!!?
Why, via d3 and e2 of course.

As if that was a hard question. 🙂

Ok WHY would he go there.
I know it's just for the sake of the puzzle but you'd think the compilers would be a little more realistic.
I'd need a board to have a go at this sort of thing.
Is it more difficult to put the puzzles up in pgn form?

He would go there because the composer puts him there so he can show cool ideas that aren't likely to happen in a game of chess.

The right question is, how do I content myself with playing games of chess when the ideas possible in chess problems are so much richer? 🙂

Surely not. That analysis is incomplete.

Yeah realism goes out the window with these sort of things lol
I like them though, they stretch your abilities to think more broadly 🙂

Eh, I used to get all nit-picky about 'you didn't give all the variations', but that usually meant I had to make 5-6 more futile posts trying to get all the side variations out of them.

Now I just assume they've solved it if they give the main line. Doggs are lazy these days.

Fair enough.

I don't think White does have a win here. I found a line which leads to king and 4 vs king and 3, but this seems to be drawn. I'll chuck it into an engine when I get home to find out for sure.

Here's my line:
1.Ng3+ Kd4 2.Rc8 Qxc8 3.Nf5+ Kc5 4.b4+ Kc6 5.Ne7+ Kc7 6.Nxc8 Kxc8 7. f5 b5

I checked that line and what u said is pretty much spot on,
it's drawing according to the computer but pfft, looks ok to this patzer.

Your turn? 🙂

I got that puzzle from "200 brilliant endgames" by Irving Chernev. I guess I should have checked over it first 😳
