What is the maximum number of moves there can be in a game of chess? You have to consider the rule if there is no capture of any piece after 50 moves, the game is drawn.

And I believe there can be a pawn move too.

16 pieces * 50 moves without capture * (8 pawns to move * 6 steps to get across) = 38400 moves theoretically. But I bet I am far from the truth now and just drank too much of that fruit juice.

That isn't what he's asking.

The answer is roughly 6,000 moves (12,000 individual moves).

The answer is infinity. Both the 50 move rule and the 3 move repetition rules must be claimed. If neither player claims then the game continues.

Therefore infinite.
