Lately, I have had the priviledge of playing much higher rated players than me and the experience has been most rewarding. Most of them have thrown book moves at me and have taught me good lessons. I am happy about finding these opponents and hope to be able to learn more from them. The postmortems with them have also been very constructive and objective. I appreciate the maturity they all had displayed playing me... Some people chicken out of the chance to play much higher rated opponents... Boy! If I had the chance to be creamed by Kasparov or Portisch I would be there playing blitz all nigth with them! Not having those fishes 🙂 I am happy to play higher rated and knowledgeable opponents here

Thanks Alopinto. Good advice.

I've read somewhere that if you want to learn, you should play folks that beat you 2/3 of the time.

According to the nifty little ratings calculator (http://www7.brinkster.com/obyrne/rhp_rc.htm), I should be playing folks rated right around 1550 then.

Fascinating... going into a game w/a 123-point deficit in rating reduces my theoretical chances of a win to 33%.

Indeed, and earning a win against higher rated players is far more satisfactory than administering a clinical defeat to a lower rated player. A loss against higher rated dudes helps to make repairs on openings before a weekend tournament, correct mistakes in the prognosis of a middlegame position and build character. What more can you ask for a free game? I know that out of 10 games I will be beaten in 5, draw 2 and perhaps win 3 but I will be honestly working on chess.

I heard a good quote recently:

Success comes from good judgement
Good judgement comes from experience
Experience comes from bad judgement

I thought it appropriate.
