That's it. An old one but a good one.

The Queen can never be the piece moving to give the discovered Check.

    White to move.

You can replace the King on d5 with any other piece bar a Queen and Rook
and it will give a discovered check.

You can replace the Rook on d5 with any other piece bar a Queen and Bishop

Put a Queen on d5 with White to move in either postion and it's an illegal position.

(though if you stick to your answer V it will hold you in good stead.
It can sometimes better to let something be taken rather than defend it with a Queen.)

    No RJ.

Apparently White played Nb3-d5. (see the blog.....but you already have?)

    ---------------------------------------------

I looked at that idea you posted RJ.
Only briefly , I dsimissed it.

I did say earlier there were few lines skipped.
I got bogged down on a Bxh7 line, ditched it, needed a cleaner line.

But I have to be honest, I quickly tossed that Bg5 idea out.
I had my White win, was now moving on to show the last trap.

White to play. Black is threatening Qg6+ Queens off.

So Bg5 threatening Qf6. "That's no good." or thoughts to that effect.
Saw the reason why White played Qh4 so went with that.

Black can play Qg6 Queens off or f6 wins the Bishop.

Of course now I see Qg6 on the board....Nd6 is mate! 🙂
Just never saw it - it happens.
Brilliant, missing mates in one now, I love it.

(kind of ruins the whole piece now...............Nah! it's still good.)

    More fodder for Rowson.
"A writier not using a computer as a tool to analyse the games is depriving the readers."

    I argue.
"They never used a computer in their games so the least I can do is the same."
(I do sometimes when I cannot get into the players heads.)

At least it proves the three of us, me and the two players were box shy....
....says GP trying to recover any shred of respectability.....

    And anyway.

Black has to play Qxg5+ turning it into a mundane White win.

My readers don't want mundane wins.
The Duck would walk away in disgust.

    That's a pint I owe your computer. RJ 😉
