Hi everyone,
I have recently been studying defences to 1.d4 in an attempt to settle on one that I like. However, all the defences assume a quick c4. I almost never face the queen's gambit - 2.Nc3 is the move that my opponents play more than 90 percent of the time. My question is whether there is a defence that I can play against 2.Nc3 that will also serve me well when I start facing the QG with more frequency. I've played the white side of 1.d4, 2.Nc3 against Fritz to see what it does, and often the early more ...c6 is played. So, perhaps a Slav? (but of course then the move ...dxc4 is ruled out, which seems to be the key move in the Slav). Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

If you really want to play 1...,d5,I don't know,I still struggle with that myself and almost never see 2.Nc3.The few times I encounter it,I just try to wing it (is that the correct expression?) 🙂

Well I play the KID. Nf6, g6 and Bg7 to most opening moves works for me. Personally as a d4 player I cringe at Nc3 after d4. It just hurts my senses. You need to allow the c push, even if not right away. Same as black shouldn't play Nc6 to allow for a c pawn push.
If play 1. ... e6 it could be French or Queen's India or Dutch.
🙂

I get the bit about the KID not being an opening suited to beginners. However I disagree. It works just fine. It often leads to positions where logic can easily determine the correct way to proceed. You have to be on your toes (especially if you face the Four Pawns) but if you can hold your own you should be ok.
As far as I can tell 1. d4 e6 2. Nc3 would be pretty unusual. Also while it can lead to the French or the Queen's Indian or even the Dutch it is described as the French Indian just as it is.
I personally play the KID. It definitely has advantages for the beginner - the biggest one is that for the first like 7 moves there's little variation in Black's moves no matter what White does, if Black chooses. Whether the middlegame play is good for beginners or not I will not comment. It took me a while to understand what I do know of it, and I am still not all that confident with it. I do pretty decently though.
1. d4 d5 2. Nc3 is wonderful for Black. Just play like you would against QG except maybe be a bit more aggressive, since there's less pressure on you. White plays Nc3 in QG too. The only difference is his cP, a standard attacking P, is stuck behind his N. Don't stress.
It is true that dxc4 is not available. Just develop and wing it, as was already suggested.

If you want to play along slav lines after 2.Nc3, play 2...c6 then aim to play the pawn break ...e5 with a reasonable game.

2.c4 ...c6
or
1.d4 ...d5
2.Nc3 ...Nf6
Like others have stated, I don't like 2.Nc3 for white there. It's perfectly playable, but I can't stand blocking in the c-pawn this early in a d-pawn opening.
Also, don't rule out the King's Indian Defense as black. I don't play it, but I play against all of the time and it's tough to crack.
After that you've got 1 ...f5 the Dutch. That's a whole other kettle of fish. If you've never played the Dutch before or haven't played any F pawn openings as white or black, I wouldn't advise you start it without some study and practice. 🙂
And 1 ...c5 the Benoni. I highly recommend you study that before playing it. Ever. Against anybody. Anywhere. Seriously. Ever.
