I've recently begun to increase my collection of free chess engines but am having a devil of a time getting the new ones to work with my copy of Fritz 7. They're UCI engines which are apparently supported by Fritz, yet I can't find the option to install them. It's either very well hidden or not there at all. Has anyone here done this before?

P.s. They're to analyse completed games, or to play against each other. I'm well aware of CC rules regarding engines!

Ok,dyl, here's how it's done. It's easy, really. You download an engine from the net,for example the faile14 engine. You go to your program files(that's where fritz is probably installed) and there should be a map 'engines'.Inside that map there is a map 'inactive engines'.Now you go to where you put the downloaded engine and copy the ENG-file into the map 'inactive engines'.You now start up fritz and click on the engines menu. You choose 'engine management' and there the faile engine shows in the window 'inactive engines'.Just click on it and then click on the arrow to transfer it to the 'active engines'.That's all.Easy,no?

I forgot to mention that I have chessbase7.The maps I was talking about are automatically placed there if you choose the default installation of fritz7.If you do not have chessbase they might be somewhere else, but I don't know where.Let me know if it works out.

Actually the problem ended up being me not having the latest update for fritz 7 😳. I finally worked it out earlier today. Thanks anyway SirLoseALot 😉.

On the subject though, does anyone know of any strong (free) engines? Nothing seems able to beat my version of Deep Junior 7, though I'm sure there's better ones out there.

You've got it working then.Sweet!
Did you try the free engines they have at chessbase.com?I don't know how good they are but I guess they're ok.Though Deep Junior 7 will be hard to beat!Isn't that one of the strongest engines around?

I believe IBM have an old engine knocking around, by the name of 'Deep Blue'. Perhaps, if you write a nice letter, they'll let you have it. Just don't make any challenges to Kasparov with it, as he's not a nice fellow when he's angry 😉

Thanks David, I just shot off an email to IBM. I used an exuberant amount of smiley faces so I'm confident they'll send me a link. Has anyone used this so called 'Deep Blue' engine before? I'm on dialup so if it's a big download I want to make sure it's worth it.

P.s. Is Kasparov a user here?

Thanks for the links Thire. I actually just found Arena myself and am finding it quite handy. Is there a way of viewing some sort of table after running a tournament? It would be good to have a way of seeing the big picture.

What trouble are you having with Rival under Arena?

A quick search has revealed that there is indeed a Garry Kasparov playing on this site. He's even beaten Sintubin in a couple of games (although by time-out).

However what really caught my eye is the astonishing game he played against Kramnik, who is also a user of the site! Here's the game link:-
http://www.timeforchess.com/gameanalysis/boardhistory.php?gameid=61165

By an amazing coincidence, the game bore a striking resemblance to an earlier masterpiece, played by none other than the great World Champion, Aldolf Anderssen:-

Rosanes,J - Anderssen,A [C31]
Breslau m Breslau, 1862

1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 e4 4.Bb5+ c6 5.dxc6 Nxc6 6.Nc3 Nf6 7.Qe2 Bc5 8.Nxe4 0-0 9.Bxc6 bxc6 10.d3 Re8 11.Bd2 Nxe4 12.dxe4 Bf5 13.e5 Qb6 14.0-0-0 Bd4 15.c3 Rab8 16.b3 Red8 17.Nf3 Qxb3 18.axb3 Rxb3 19.Be1 Be3+ 0-1

I wonder if Garry knows?

😉

yes it is possible to create a table with an overview over the turnament. As I do not have arena here I don't know exactly how... I can help you later.
BTW: the new version is coming out Friday! 🙂
my probs with Rival: I tryed to install it as an wb-engine and made the link to the exe-file but when Arena starts Rival it starts the whole program and I can play against rival under its own GUI and not under Arena. got it? who can help me? I did not register Rival. (BTW russ: the rival pages here do not work very well: quity buggy...)

When I played through the game, I had a strong feeling I'd seen it before. So I got the pgn of the game and pasted it into Chessbase. A quick search of the final position found the Anderssen game.
