Do you go through any kind of process before every move you make? Like "what is my opponents threat?" etc? I realize this probably becomes a natural process for seasoned players, but I think it would help solidify my game if I asked myself a list of questions after every move my opponent makes.
thanks for any suggestions.
at one point I took up systematic blunder checking. I simply went through all my pieces and pawns one by one, and checked they were safe from 1-move blunders. then I did the same to my opponent's pieces. I also checked against simple mates. nothing fancy, just simple 1-movers.
won 30 games straight against my peers. huge rating boost.

Take your time. Tomorrow answers may be different than today. Just because you understand more the situation.
i read in a book that it is important to ask yourself
1)is the piece, or pawn i move safe from attack.
2)is the piece or pawn i move advancing my position
3)is the piece or pawn i move attacking my opponent's position.
if the move satisfies all 3 then proceed.
mind you this book was written for beginners trying to become familiar with the game.
