I recently signed up(fee acct) and am used to playing a bit of speed chess on another online site usually 1min to 5 mins a game..the games here seem so slooooooooow 😛 have the 6 games running and am finding it real dificult to spend more than 10 secs or so looking for my next move
any tips? or has the few years of on and off speeed chess ruined my ability to concentrate for more than a few secs on any given position?

Try to make a checklist for yourself and go through it each time before you move. It slows you down and helps prevent blunders.

When you think you've found a good move, try harder to find a better one, chances are there is one but you're not seeing it straight away. Some moves obviusly play themselves but other more tactical moves can be analysed for a long time in correspondance chess.

I had the same problem when I started here about two months ago, althought I played fast chess only for two months prior to that. but it actually changed pretty quick, because opponents move so slow you have nothing to do but wait and think about the position. weaving "most cunning plans." of course I suck at blitz, even worse than at slow chess, so maybe your problem playing fast isn't as bad as mine. 🙂

for actual tips I don't have anything else than take your time. you have all the time in the world. after you've decided your move, look around if you neglected anything, checks, removing guard, threats of forks, discovered threats etc. -the things that are obvious. nothing is worse than getting mated in a won position because you didn't see that obvious fork or that ominous bishop looming in the other end of the board.

just yesterday I dropped SECOND piece in a game for moving fast, so there's still work to do...

The checklist idea is good. What I do is I methodically look at every possible move I can make, and once I've picked one, look at every possible move the opponent can make in response. This generally catches the really dumb blunders.
