On the main page that shows games after checkmate I've noticed that it is mainly low rated players who actually get checkmated. This means that only low rated games end up on that page. I used to enjoy playing through some of the interesting positions I saw. Now I'm not so interested anymore.

If you don't see the checkmate coming (and usually resign), you are usually pretty bad.

I noticed this as well and only play over the games that look like
there have been swindles. (see quite a few).

Just finished one my games with a 'mate from the Blue'.

Torrid game by me. I nicked a pawn but have a stale position.
Terrible Knights. (though they win the game for me).

I have to get the Queens off due to open files v my King.
Surprised he allowed me.

I eventually come up with idea of throwing up my h-pawn.

But he should not have pushed c4-c5 till he was better prepared
by putting a Rook on the 2nd Rank.
After c4-c5 my Knight plonked itself on d4.

After I played 26...Nxe4 I saw he had Bg2 which may infact be a win
for him. I decided he might miss it and the mate was attractive
enough not to let slip by. (good chess huh?).

I can also mate also with 27...Rd2+ with same theme.

So I wonder if this will make the front page.

Scrappy game - watch me chop and change plans till I stumble
across the h-paw idea. We both played on auto pilot I think
he should have taken his 3 days. I would have.

Correct. People who insist on being checkmated no matter how badly they are losing are usually jerks.

A wee bitty harsh Sammy, though I hear what you are saying.

Some players have had a succesful stalemate in totally lost positions
on here - the site is littered with them.

If they have had one (for or against) then they will play on.
Hope is eternal.

Also some players may not be good enough to know they are losing
and contiuing is pointless. It's not their fault.

There are a lot of home and casual players on this site. They enjoy
playing just because they enjoy playing.
Some would think it's impolite or cowardly to resign

Also, (I can't remember where I read this recently), but apparently there's a type of "checkmate ettiquette". Seems if you're in a resignable position, but you want to see how the game would play out, it's OK to play the game out to mate. The only caveat is that, if you do this, it's considered bad form to resign one or two moves before mate. (You're getting to see the rest of the game, and in exchange, you're allowing your opponent the joy of giving checkmate.)

Has anyone else heard of this checkmate ettiquette?

I remember one of the early lessons I had in chess which was: Never give up a game you don't know what will happen.

And sometimes I am interested in the end of a game.

And I normally don't give up if I see a mate on the move.

I think resigning is losing on purpose.

this is an old game, in which something a bit like that happened. the opponent dragged the mate for 3-4 months, then after I asked him to please play it until the mate, he resigned one move short. which was within his right of course, but an obvious flip of the finger as well.

ironically our ratings have reversed since this game was played (the pgn shows current ratings), seems he's mass resigned all his lost games once again recently. he's been doing that since I joined, so not making many friends that guy... anyway I was 1600 at the time I think, and quite proud of the game so I would've liked to have the complete game until mate on the pgn.

seems all a bit pointless now, but the game itself doesn't look half bad to me even today:

Maybe some people are having a chat during games and would like to play to the end.

Sometimes if someone's whooped my ass i'll let them have the satisfaction of checkmating me.

I typically play out games to the last move only if:

1) I'm playing against a friend who wants to work on their end game.

2) It's not forced mate and I think that with good tactical play I can squeeze a draw.

3) It's a forced mate, but so far out that I doubt they see it.

4) (This one I feel a little guilty about) They're about to win a lot of other games and their rating is going to shoot up. I take less of a loss in my own when they finally beat me.

5) I totally didn't see it coming. Unless it's a brilliant mate, it's usually the result of me moving after 10pm. 🙁
