If you draw vs. someone better than you, your rating goes up. If you draw vs. someone worse than you, your rating goes down.

OK, thanks, so would it go up (or down) by the same amount as if you had won (or lost ) the game?

You can work out how your rating will be affected win/lose or draw using this

You get credit for 1/2 of a win, but the rating change is additive. The result of a draw is half-way between a win and a loss.

So for most of us, if a win would increase our rating by X, then a draw would increase our rating by X-16, which may or may not be an actual increase. (A loss would increase our rating by X-32, which would be a decrease).

So if a win against a higher rated player stands to increase our rating by 20, then a draw against that player would increase our rating by 4.

If a win against a lower rated player stands to increase our rating by 9, then a draw against that player would decrease our rating by 7 (i.e. 9 - 16).

A game result that increases our rating by 4, normally decreases our opponents rating by 4 (unless they are high enough to have a K factor below 32).
