I thought playchess.com might be cheat-free because of the messages which often crop up about such-and-such being banned for engine use. However David Tebb (I think) told me that the playchess.com standalone program merely detects when an engine is being used on the same machine and flags this as cheating. It doesn't check the games themselves, so someone w ...[text shortened]... able to get away with anything. Also, the cheats aren't banned - their rating is simply reset!
David was the one who mentioned playchess to me as a possibility.

I didn't mean that such an approach was not possible, but that it would be extremely inefficient and klunky. practically useless. it doesn't address the problem of recognizing engine moves in any way. in a relatively slow game, you could even use another computer for the analysing.
That's why I said that RHP can use some new ideas, but they will need to maintain a mod team.
Originally posted by Fat Ladythere's basically two choices: blitzin & dasher. the latter is newer and probably slightly better in my opinion, but it's still a work in progress and can't really beat babaschess on fics. although it's good enough, and they're doing relatively frequent updates so it's been steadily getting better.
Me too. It's been many years since I played there last and the client programs must have improved a bit since then!
Originally posted by wormwoodI used blitzen the last time I was there.

there isn't a big difference, the main thing probably is that blitzin looks so damn ugly. it naturally has more functions as it's a lot older. nothing crucial though.
David was suggesting Playchess. I'm a little more inclined to go to ICC.
Are there differences in time controls? I mostly played 5 and 10 minute at ICC the last time. I like the format here where I don't have to play the whole game in one sitting.
Originally posted by Red Nighton ICC there are new special categories (and ratings) for 1-minute, 5-minute and 15-minute blitz in addition to the normal bullet and blitz. the main difference is that the 5-min etc. variants have automatic opponent selection (close to your rating), automatic forfeit on disconnection and minimum lag requirement. you just click the 5-min button and get a game (usually in seconds) with absolutely no hassle. the controls for the 'minute variants' are 1/0, 5/0 and 15/0.

you can set up any other controls within the normal bullet & blitz.
there's a CC category as well btw, but I haven't tried it.
I haven't really played much on playchess, but the little I have I didn't like it much. the free client was just total crap, but maybe it works better through fritz? I don't know... I suspect people like playchess mainly because the ratings are higher.
Originally posted by wormwoodI'm leaning towards ICC. I'm sort of busy right now. But, I'll try to report back once I have created my account with some feed back on what I find.

Thanks for all of the info wormwood.

Is this an exodus?
Dodgy server downtime problems/no gamesexplorer updates promised for late last year then for the start '08/game Mods disbanded because of apparent foul play amongst the ranks.
It isn't surprising that folk (especially paying customers) are looking elsewhere, is it?
I notice that the gamesexplorer thread in "announcements" has now quietly been closed.
Nothing like a nice slap in the face to make you cough up more dough.
