I'm not interested in this book because it's above my level, but I know it's been talked about here before. It was out of print for a long time and rather pricey. Some here know it's been reprinted by Ed Labate and is available again, but I'm sure some haven't heard the news.

I haven't read this English version, I've read the book in German language some years ago, but this book is very instructional, despite what is said about the lay out in the review you posted. I can highly recommend it for everybody who seriously wants to improve his or her tactical abilities.

I also just noticed this review by Silman. He doesn't mention anything about the layout, so it must not have been a major problem for him. He also highly praises the book.

Edward Labate has sent me several copies of this book to sell (though I'll keep one for myself!). If anyone in Britain would like one, please send me a message.

What exactly constitutes an advanced player?

I would be interested to know that answer to that question also.

An advanced player is someone who shuns books that have
begineer or elementry in the title.

Even though they fall for begineer and elementry tactics.

They buy the Advanced book because like most chess players
they think they are better than what they really are.

The author of the Advanced book will assume that the reader has
already read the elementry books and is now ready for something harder.

The harder puzzles are far too hard for our 'advanced players' so
they either get their computer to solve them thinking this is actually
doing them good.
Or sell it, unread, on ebay.

I'm not really sure, but I'm fairly certain that I'm not one of them. 😵

In order to read this book and understand what is being said about tactics I would say you need a minimum rating of say ... 1400-1500 Elo. Advanced means in this case "not a beginner".

"CHESS TACTICS FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS is one of the best ever books on this subject. If you enjoy studying combinations and tactics, and if you want to improve your strength in these two areas, then this is the book for you!"

I absolutely agree with Silman on this.
