After 10...Qc8 black would avoid checkmate threats with material advantage.

I think after 10..g5 he would follow with 11. Qh5+ g6, 12. Qxg6#

Of course 10..Qc8 would give black the room they needed - as Korch mentioned.

Or even 7...g6 and then taken the rook on the next move.

I remember paying for a few of my OTB games to be annotated by an IM. After submitting a (won) game of mine with annotations I was quite surprised by the IM's notes. I'd made quite a few poor moves that I thought were good and misunderstood my opponents play. The win was due to a later mistake by the opponent.
