So, after looking and looking for a good opening as white I have found the Ruy, Center Attack with an 5. d4 (as opposed to 6. d4) to avoid the Open Defense.

"...leads to sharp play. Black can hold the balance, but it is easy to make a misstep."

Anyone play this?

Any unavoidable transpostions into the boring ol' regular Ruy?

Good grief man!
You're a King's Gambiteer. What are you doing playing an easily refuted opening such as the RL? 😛

When you say easily refuted which defenses are you referring to?

I have a book on this !!!

It's an old pamplet called Meet C.A.R.L. (Center Attack In Ruy Lopez).

🙂

It's dated an unnecessary, but I thought I would mention it. hehe

It looks premature, but according to my database it is the best scoring of white´s possibilities. What is more my database engine (SCID) gives average rating for the players who played it as well as an average performance as an effective rating. For 5. 0-0 the average rating is 2421 and the average performance 2459 (+38). For the move 5. d4 the average rating of the players who played it was 2284, but the performance was 2365 (+81).

It´s probably not as good as the other options, but unless you are playing a supergrandmaster they are not going to work out the problems with it over the board. If you think you can get black out of their comfort zone then play it.
