If you're playing black against the Ruy Lopez and you get to:
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5 a6
4. Bxc6 ?
Should you (black) retake with the b pawn or the d pawn? In general, which provides better structural positioning (more like less bad positioning)?

4...bxc6
5.Nxe5
if you take with d pawn
4...dxc6
5.Nxe5 Qd4
you get your pawn back plus block a castle.
Originally posted by Ason Pigg2While I think it's better to take with the d-pawn, I don't think taking with the b-pawn is quite as bad as you state. If 4...bxc6 5.Nxe5, then 5...Qg5 6.Nf3 Qxg2 7.Rg1 Qh3 gets the pawn back. (Or, another variation, if 4...bxc6 5.Nxe5, then 5...Qg5 6.d4 Qxg2 7.Qf3 Qxf3 8.Nxf3 also gets the pawn back.)

But 4...dxc6 opens up the diagonal for the Queen bishop and makes for easy development and active play for black.
Originally posted by wittywonkaThis is a Ruy Lopez basic like they said, you must use the d pawn to retate or else loose your e pawn, white can't take becuase then the queen can fork the knight and rook on d4.
