1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.Qe2!? (Although I don't get why white should bother....) 5...b5 6.Bb3 Be7 7.O-O O-O 8.c3 d6
The move 5.Qe2 is the focus of the new book Play The Ruy Lopez (The "Pla y The..." series is excellent, and this book looks great!) probably so that the author didn't have to spend a solid 500 pages on the opening. My question is basically, should white really bother with this line? My original idea when I picked up the Ruy was the move 9.d4!? which seems better than the strange looking 5.Qe2. I want the book, especially because there are over 200+ pages covering side variations! but I'm not sure that I should bother to look through the 5.Qe2 pages (supposedly about 120 pg.) or not. Any comments about this variation?

Originally posted by cmsMasterIt's one way of avoiding the Marshall gambit, Open defense and Berlin defense; three hated defenses with one shot. The problem is black can get an early 8...d5 advance which white dare not take, allowing black an objectively equal game early on.

Nevertheless, it's at least as good as the other anti marshall ruy systems. Furthermore, equality does not necessarily mean draw if one side knows the positions better than the other, like Short who had played it with success at one time.
Originally posted by cmsMasterI suppose it adds some defense to the e4 Pawn, which is generally one of Black's targets. It would also allow the King Rook to get on the other side of the Queen, e.g. to protect the d-Pawn with Rook instead of Queen. It doesn't seem to be of tremendous use, but then I am not familiar with those attacks Regicidal refers to. I am lazy and don't research these things as much as I should.
