Hey guys! I was wondering if any of you play this opening. Whether you do or not doesn't matter, but I would like to have your opinion.

On the plus side its pretty simple compared to some of the other kings pawn openings, but black gets a pretty good game. Its a solid opening though.

I love the Scotch and think it's a great opening for exciting tactical chess...it's what made my switch to 1.d4 such a hard decision.

forget Nxd4 but play c3,the gambit variation,or the Goering gambit with Dxc3,Bc4 cxb2,Bxb2 I love the Goering,it's for daredevils but mostly black picks up the wrong path and white wins easily.
The regular scotch is safe but slow. The Goering is also possible in the Philidor (e4 e5,Nf3 d6,d4 etc.)

I don't play e4 but i've seen a lot of SS's ^^ games and it looks pretty strong for white. Though black can dodge it quite sweetly by transposing into the philidor. 😉😛

IMO, most people response to the Scotch with 4. ... Bc5, avoiding the theoretical Mieses variation (4. ... Nf6 5. Nxc6 bxc6 6. e5 Qe7 7. Qe2 Nd5). Lines with 4. .. Bc5 are easier to play and thus harder to win against.

I like your idea in your game 3647045, where you adopt an English attack formation so to speak to storm Black's kingside. According to you, is it one of the reasons you choose this strategy rather than going main line?

I play it very often: I like it coz it frees the d-line for the Queen (but also the e-line for Black's King, which is no good to him), and coz after Nxd4 the White center in my opinion is superior.

Well I'm just 1455 so there might be some stupid elements in my chess thoughts, but it's a matter of fact that the Scotch opening is guaranteed, even by Garry Kasparov, who started to play it again after more than a century it had been completely forgotten at high levels...So play it and enjoy it
