I read somewhere about Short's King Gambit. Perhaps this result is as a result of such a "world class opening" as the King's Gambit? Why don't GMs like Kasparov or Karpov play the KG?

king's gambit...one of the old openings from the "Romantic Era" of chess, 1800's or so, it's gone in and out of style, never been refuted. Some of the greats played it, like Alekhine, Keres, TAL!!!, Fischer, even, (before he was beaten by it), and Spassky. David Bronstien did too. Nigel Short played it and did quite well. It's OK.

If Tal and Bronstein liked the King's Gambit, who dares to say different?

The King's Gambit is alive and well when my opponents at blitz dare to play 1...e5 against my 1 e4. (Since I'm only rated 1800, I guess that's not a very convincing sales pitch for the opening, is it?)

In that tournament Short did play simply bad in most of his games - so finding fault in Kings gambit (which he did use in one game) is really childish.

Here is that game.

[Event "8th It"]
[Site "Montreal CAN"]
[Date "2007.07.28"]
[Round "9"]
[White "Short,N"]
[Black "Bluvshtein,M"]
[Result "0-1"]
[WhiteElo "2683"]
[BlackElo "2520"]
[EventDate "2007.07.19"]
[ECO "C34"]

1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 Ne7 4. d4 d5 5. Qe2 Ng6 6. h4 h5 7. Nc3 c6 8.
exd5+ Be7 9. Qe4 O-O 10. Bc4 Bd6 11. Kf2 c5 12. Nb5 Re8 13. Qxe8+ Qxe8 14.
Nxd6 Qd8 15. dxc5 Nd7 16. Re1 Qa5 17. Re8+ Ndf8 18. Ne4 Qa4 19. Rxf8+ Kxf8
20. b3 Qa5 21. Bd2 Qd8 22. Re1 Bg4 23. Nfg5 Ne5 24. Nd6 Nxc4 25. bxc4 Qd7
26. Ngxf7 Qa4 27. Bxf4 Qxa2 28. Ng5 Qxc2+ 29. Kg1 a5 30. Kh2 a4 31. Nxb7 a3
32. Bd6+ Kg8 33. Re7 Qf2 34. Bg3 Qf6 35. Rf7 a2 36. Rxf6 gxf6 37. Ne4 a1=Q
38. c6 Qf1 39. d6 Ra1 40. Bf2 Qh1+ 41. Kg3 Ra3+ 42. Kf4 Qc1+ 0-1

White could get some opening advantage playing 9.Ne5 (instead of 9.Qe4).

10.Bc4? (instead of 10.Bxf4) was bad - black could get advantage playing 10...Bxh4+ (instead of 10...Bd6)

18.Ne4? was decisive mistake - after 18.Nb5 position was unclear.
