Hey guys,
For those, like me, who are waiting for Silman's Complete Endgame Course: From Beginner To Master, it looks like there's finally an official release date for it on Amazon. Jan 8, 2007. I say it looks official because it has an updated page count and I know that the typesetting was what has been holding it up for these several months.
In response to an email I sent him a few months ago, Silman wrote that the publishers were making him cut stuff because the projected 500+ pages was "too long". Now, however, Amazon is listing the book at 532 pages. It looks like he won that battle, and so did all his fans. 🙂
Originally posted by chesskid001I didnt like Yassers endgame book he gave a real half hearted explaination of end games, especially pawn endings, he talks about the opposition but he doesnt even explain what the opposition is, very bad book imo. You should pick up a copy of Secrets of Pawn Endings, and read the first chapter of HTRYC by Silman to really learn pawn endgames.
I'm still working on Yasser Seirawans endgame book and Just the Facts!.
Well, something that hte book taught me (Philidors Position) secured me a draw today agaist a 1600 in an OTB game. It is quite difficult... I knew most of the King&Pawn stuff, I'm working on the rook now. The rooks are hard, but I actually found it to be a decent book. I now know how(wow, four words ending in -ow!) to win K&Q vs K&P endgames. Since it is not meant to be an endgame manual, I got just the facts also.
I don't really see the point in spending 15-20 dollars for HTRYC if I can really only use one chapter. As far as I understand, that book is for 1600ish level.... I'm 1250 now, so I still have a bit to go.
Secrets of pawn endings? Wouldn't it be better to learn endgames in general first to get a good grasp and a good foundation? Once I learn that, if I realize I'm weak specifically in pawn endings, then I may consider purchasing it.
