It has happened 100's of times in OTB play.
Usually the mated player resigns before the mate is delivered.
Sit back and watch Morphy (White) do it in brilliant style v Schrufer, Paris, 1859.
Morphy's Knight play is superb, he saw the smothered mate in this
position so he sacced the g5 Knight on f7 to free e7 for another Black
piece that would block the Queen's defence of d7.
The man was a genius.

Do you know where I can get a collection of Morphy's ANNOTATED games, please?

Morphy the greatest?
Without seeing the AJ Goldsby article I can see why someone would
put a case a forward stating Morphy was the greatest.
You have to think how far chess would have advanced if it had not
been for the players who went before.
How much debt do the players of today owe to the players of the past?
If there was no Alekhine would we have had a Kasparov? etc. etc.
So you keep tracing it back. So and so learned from him, and this player
learned from that player.
But everything stops at Morphy - who taught Morphy?
OK the defensive techniques we know today had not been developed then.
But neither had the attacking methods that Morphy used.
Every great player from Steinitz to Annand can be traced back to
Morphy. Who showed Morphy?
Certainly, if I were to write an article stating Morphy was the greatest
then this is path I would follow. Who taught Morphy.
So where can I get my hands on the AJ Goldsby article.
Originally posted by greenpawn34It's not exactly an article, Geoff. Goldsby just wrote it on his website after extensively annotating a couple of Morphy's games.

Your point about who taught Morphy is very strong. I hadn't thought about it before. But what about the likes of Philidor, Labourdonnais and McDonell? Morphy may have picked up a few thing from them. esp. Phillidor's Legacy.
But his genius is definately undisputed!
