white mates in 2. I saw this in a newspaper, I've solved over a hundred of these at work over the last whatever months, but this one I can't. Did they make a mistake or am I missing something?
If they meant mate in 3 , it would be too easy.
I had chessmaster look at it and it found a mate in 3 asap, l'm not sure if you can set it up to make it look for a mate in 2 and then have it tell you if it is possible or not.

Mentally reconstructed on Chessmaster XI.

It's an absurd position that could never occur in a game. Yes, the board is setup correctly hence why it's absurd to trap your bishops n rooks in, and block your own pawns from promoting. Damn you Toronto Star

I'll try to get right board. (got it - phew).

New rule - if you are going to post a position for people
to look at then fen it.

IF and only IF they made a mistake and meant mate in 3 instead of 2, you could go like so:

1. Rxg7 Kxd3
2. Ne4c5+ Ke3
3. Bd5#

There is a mate in two available. It was composed by Byron Zappas and was published in 1968. (I had to look that up via SG's mystery source, I didn't know it)

sight, after 20 collective minutes of doing it at work, I couldn't get squat, took me 2 min staring at the screen.. gRRR!

I'd like to say "not that hard" but I feel stupid especially after trying the first move in my head so many times.

1. Bc4 Kf3
2. ...?

You'll need to find some mates after 1. ... Kf3 first. That cuts the options considerably.

Yeah, didn't notice that one. 🙁

EDIT:

1. Bd5

1. ... Kf3 2. Nf6#
1. ... Kd3 2. Nc5#
1. ... fxe4 2. Qh3#
1. ... Nxe8 2. Rg3#
1. ... Ne6 2. Rg3#
1. ... Nh5 2. Nc5#

I don't have a board right here, so I might have missed something. Not sure.

EDIT2: Someone beat me to it. 😳
