I really don't know why I'm posting this except as a basic complaint/whine... This doesn't apply to RHP by the way. Not so far in my experience here.
I was playing blitz on another site (not Uchess). 10 minute games. Just finished the last one. I've come to the conclusion that all blitz sites need a way to turn off any form of chat or communication. And how sad is that?
My last game is rolling along just fine. Dead even IMO. Tough position. I'm attacking the center in an opening I play all of the time. We're both about even on the clock, but I'm a little behind. Out of nowhere my opponent sacs a bishop in a position I've never seen anyone try it in before. Just BOOM! There goes my kingside. No problem. He can't mate me. I take a little extra time, recapture, and start planning to trade down.
About 3 moves later I'm in deep trouble. He sacs a pawn. The recpature looked forced. Uh oh... Now I'm sweating. The end result several moves later is I give up my queen for a rook to stave off mate. I play a few more moves but I'm hosed. I resign. It was really brilliant on his or her part.
So my opponent sends me a message. "You played well, nice game". I respond "Thank you, very nice game yourself".
Then I get this: "BWAHAHAHA! You really think you played well????? You SUK!!!!"
And yes, suck was spelled "SUK".
Now I had every intention of saving that game and studying it. I really wanted to take a good look at that sac, because it could pop up again since that position comes up frequently in games I play. I doubt it's sound anywhere but blitz, but hey I need to know how to refute it for blitz. But I didn't save the game, because I was so ticked off I just hit close and closed out the window. That was the final straw for today...
I can get back to the position in my head, but from the sac and recapture forward I can't recall the exact sequence of moves. I can get close, but close isn't accurate. So now I'm stuck.
GRRRRRRR!
The point is, besides not being able to play over the game, why oh why do these people even play chess? Is it just to taunt and ridicule? That seems rather childish and pointless. I just don't get it.

Should you beat them, they'll say things like 'you got lucky' 'what program are you using',stuff like that.Personally,I find it amusing, sometimes I like to have a lil fun with them, then I reply 'you're right,I suck big time!' 'geesh, you play like a god' 'you must be a GM',dunno why,but that seems to confuse them, sometimes they get more mad and it's like they're having a seizure, but sometimes they calm down, and even apologise.Crazy people! 😕🙄
Too bad you lost that game.Maybe if you post the position, people here can help figure it out 🙂
Oh yeah, they type 'SUK' because most sites have a profanity filter, and it's impossible to write words like 'SUCK'.
I've gotten lot of junk over ICC. I've learned to set the kibitz to 0 so I don't have to put up with it, but then the creeps have learned to send their creepy messages after the game. I've reported it to ICC, but what are they going to do? You never learn the results of reporting. And, oh yea, the other day I was palying a game and apparently someone tried to message me during the game because after the game I get, "I think it's rude not to accept tells during the game. This is the last time you'll be playing me." What are you going to do? The worst thing to do is have a verbal exchange with these people (as suggested), they are morons and don't get ironic comments. They deal exclusively with personal attacks, profanity, and bad spelling. I've never had the problem at playchess.com because I close the chat window and that's that.

Chess is supposed to be a game of intellectuals, but these guys are certainly not that, in fact, they are quite dumb, most of them. This is what makes me beleive blitz is not real chess. Do you know how they win? First, they have very quick mouse reflexes, ie: they use their mouse effectively to save time, and second, they attack and complicate positions, no matter what the cost, to run you dry on time. I'm willing to bet your opponent's bishop and pawn sacrefice were unsound, you just didn't have the time to find adequate defenses. In blitz it's worth sacreficing at all costs to continue attacking, in blitz, he who attacks 100% of the time, wins 100% of the time.

To prove my case in point, one time, I played this 2100 rated guy who only plays 2 min games. I made a challenge with him, that I, as a mere 1500 rated player, play him a 60 min each game. First he was hesitant, but then he decided to play me to prove that Yahoo 2100 raters know their chess. He thought it would be easy, but not only did I beat him, but I was up two whole entire minor peices in the endgame. The moral of the story is, most blitz "chess" players online know nothing about the intelligence aspect of the game. In fact, I used this game as proof, with many Yahoo witnesses, that they know crap about chess, and they just told me to "STFU, I got lucky", yep, it was luck that I was up two whole minor peices and 4 pawns in an endgame against a 2100 rater, lol!
I had a similar experience on uchess today mid way through a game. I just stopped chatting back. In my case the player was 15 (he told me, I didn't ask), I just put in down to his youth.
I understand the frustration but personally, I think you just have to take the good with the bad. Enjoy the good, ignore the bad. And there's plenty of good to make it worth while.
Oh and BTW, yes I did lose.

Some people are griefers. They like to give other people a hard time because it's funny. And it is funny. It's just the way it is.
I am not a griefer though.
First time i've heard the term "griefer" had to look it up in Google. Apparently they are gamers who like to give other gamers a bad time in any way possible. they aren't really interested in the game as much as humiliating the opponent. they are "cyberbullies" of the schoolyard. Ignoring and reporting them is the standard solution. another method is that the number of complaints gets attached to their handle so that others can be warned who they are dealing with. I think that's a marvelous idea. When they reach a certain point, they are ejected from the site. How about that for a solution?
Originally posted by buddy2There is nothing like starting a character and greeting a player, then having that player to kill you with nothing less than a level fifty spell like Ice Comet. This happened to me many times in EverQuest. In servers like Yahoo I have not been treated much better. To date in servers like this one all I have had to deal with was a few insults.

Btw,I wasn't exactly suggesting to have verbal exchanges with these people, that's just what I sometimes do,I'm not saying you should do it too.And I don't mean calling them names yourself, just agree with them, for some reason it makes them go beserk, next they quit all together and usually never bother you again. It has worked fine for me in the past.
Also, when you get them to open all registers, without doing anything wrong yourself, you have a stronger case if you report them 😀
Well I appreciate all of the responses.
I suppose I'll just try to completely ignore it, but it's tough, and kinda sad.
By the way, I'd never heard the term "griefer" before either. Sounds like another one of those folks that hide behind their pc monitor and say things they'd never have the nerve to say to someone's face.

Yes, agreeing with them usually works, because they normally want to provoke a negative response and get you pissed off.
Originally posted by lauseyTo date I have just played the game to a finish and left. Name calling bring you down to that player's level and makes you just as guilty. It is also the behavior of bad sportsmanship that ruins the game experiance. Such as repeated draw offers when your clock is low. Changing the time of the game to a low time setting and starting the game. Not to mention booting or in some way hacking the game. Still I guess most (90%?) of the players are there to play a fair game.

Originally posted by mateuloseBlitz chess is chess. Chess is a game. It's not a game for intellectuals (although I will admit that good chess players normally are average or above in intelligence). Being a game it does not preclude any people. Anyone who wants to play chess can play. They can choose to play blitz or lightning or standard or rapid or long or untimed. It doesn't change the fact that they are playing chess. Now you may not like blitz. I used to hate it. Mostly because I was so bad. Now I'm better at it. I find 90% of the time I can play a pretty reasonable game in 5 0 time controls. It won't be perfect, it won't be as good as if I had 3 hours but it's ok. Sometimes I blunder. Sometimes the opponent blunders. But I've found that blitz allows for more exciting games at times. Of course you may be playing the wrong kind of people. Yahoo players and Uchess players may just play for the mistake and sac randomly. However I play on playchess and the atmosphere and games I play there are very enjoyable. Please get off your high horse. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it "not chess".

The best way to deal with a griefer is not to let them get to you. They have a certain amount of power, and you need to accept that. Some things they do are powerless unless you give them power, like verbal abuse or using your self imposed rules of "fairness" or "honor" against you. This is one reason why I play games by the rules of the game and don't let people peer pressure me into taking on other rules that they decide are "honorable."
Griefers win when they get to you emotionally. That is their objective. They like to see people get mad and upset. If you have the ability to recognize this and not let it happen, then they cannot win, and they will generally give up and respect you to some extent.
