As long as you build up a big center, you should come out with a very comfortable position.

By the way, as a practitioner of the St George, I feel obliged to point out that h6 does not figure in that particular opening, b5 is usually played instead.

1.e4 a6 2.d4 b5 might be safer for black.

St.George is not too bad for Black.

A mate of mine plays it in the 1st Division of Yorkshire League (Board 4ish)
That's pretty high rated opposition BCF (160-170) and wins most games with it.

Good enough for Mike Basman anyway.

Around 1990 MB obviously decided the St. George wasn't rubbish enough as it was started playing it a tempo down i.e. with

1. ... h6
2. ... a6
3. ... b5

I saw him get a draw with it against Danny King at the British Championships one year.

I'm sure it's fully playable at club level. I'm equally sure I don't want to play it.

I'd be happy to play just about anyone in a game with that...

1. e4 a6
2. d4 h6 +/=

Simple development should lead white into a very comfortable middlegame.

IM Michael Basman once wrote a booklet that I own and read called "The Creepy Crawley." The first three moves are 1...a6 2...h6 and 3...c5. The book and the opening are amusing, but probably, of course, not "correct."

True enough ...

but that game I mentioned a bit earlier between Danny King and Mike Basman:-

I forgot to mention Danny King is a Grand Master.

If Black can draw against a GM with these moves it's obviously not that bad
