    The game is now over. I feel that white's resignation was somewhat premature since black clearly wasn't going to give checkmate except by accident.

    Agreed. Playing on was a sound option.

    Black missed a mate in one on move 78, here he played 78...Rg6



    and in the final position.



    White should have played his only move 85.Kh1 just to see if
    Black played the clumsy 85...Rg2 thus falling in line with the
    name of this thread.
