It happens when the player on move has no legal moves and his king is not in check.

Congrats! Over 2200 games without having to know about stalemate. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you

Never hand this issue before and was confused as I had two queens in my last game, guess I need to read up on the rules a bit more

53...Qg3# would have finished him off nicely. Just remember that when you're tightening the noose on a mating net, be careful of any non-checking moves. By definition, that's when stalemates can occur.

Your game Game 5091532

Don't worry about it - look at this hooror. I'm Black.

I'm thinking. When he plays 31.Qxf8+ I play 31...Rg8 discovered
check and win the Queen.

He played 31.Qxh7+ ! stalemate.

What made it all the more galling was I played a good game.
A Queen sac for loads of piece activity. He saw and set up the
stalemate trap ages ago. I never even smelt it coming.

Here is the full game.

R.Austin v G.Chandler, Edinburgh C.C. 1980.

I've added 31...Kxh7 to show the stalemate.

Ouch, that one had to hurt. Nice con job from your opponent, though.

That is snatching defeat from the very jaws of victory. Makes one want to break your own fingers for pressing the submit button๐Ÿ™

Now that is resourceful.
I've never set up something that Machiavellian myself,
I'd like to try...
