The wiki page that Austin wrote, under the guise of the fictitious Gary Topov, say's that it started as a hoax in 2004, but now it isn't.

So, we can dismiss any of the history based on the perpetuator of the hoaxes own admission.

The next question would be: has the original hoax morphed into a real "game"

The answer to that question is NO. It is not a real game. It may be a simulated game, I'm not sure. I have logged on to this silly site to see the extent of the hoax.

Final question: are you Bowmann, a partipant in the hoax, someone who got duped themselves, or a combination of those three. Answer this question and I will talk to you more.

my friends and I are quite sure it is a game where about half the moves of both players get randomly replaced by a random legal chess move

Yes there are many reasons.

The biggest of course being that SRC isn't a game but an elaborate hoax.
