I managed to gather 5000 tactical tests from the internet and now I would like to train myself.

Normally I would use SCID but that program is not optimal for what I need which is:

1. Keep a record of the positions where I missed the solution to the puzzle
2. Keep statistics of how I solved the puzzles

With SCID I can hide the move that follows and I can also use an engine to play against but 1 and 2 are missing. I could use chessposition trainer but it doesn't indicate the puzzles that I missed...

Any ideas?

Not to whine or anything: The whole thing has got to be FREE

And of course, I will send the pgn file to whomever asks me nicely for it but with no guarantees for its acuraccy!

Thanks!

i'm not sure about which program to u but with studying the tactics. i read this article on chesscafe.com

400 points in 400 days... the basic idea is to collect 1000 or so puzzles organize them from easy to hard and then do them 7 times. the first time u take 64 days to do them all, then 2nd round u do them in 32 days, then 16,8,4,2,1.

This way u use repetition and the patterns stick into u're head... i started doing this last year and my rating has improve, i'm at 1713 canadain at my chess club and i my friend also has been doing this and we can both spot tactics way quicker and see tactics which we couldn't see before... before i could barely see mate in 2 and now i can see mate in 4 and 5 easily.....

i'm on round 3 but i've shed 5 hours of each round..first round took me 27 hours, second 22 hours about....

Yes, I think I have seen that article too by Michael de la Maza.

People suggest CT ART but I am looking for something free. I will write the guy from Chessposition trainer and see what he says.

yups the freebie, i was thinking the same way thats why i didn't buy ct-art 2 and then i spent 90 hours collecting 1000 problems and copying the positions into chess maker and put them on a word document so i could use it on my computer without the internet....

the program was only 30 dollars 40 max so i basically wasted 90 whole hours!!!!!!!!!!! but i guess u found u're problems online so that good but how are u going to organize them from easy to hard?

"how are u going to organize them from easy to hard?"

I am not going to. My training is going to be completely random and the level of difficulty will be variable. My attitude is to solve whatever shows up on the screen without any hints or clues.

CPT does this for you automatically. It saves the results for each training position and will focus on those positions where you had your worst training results -> for you personal the most difficult positions.
