Three advantages that the CC player has over the OTB player when faced with having to make a move in a difficult or unclear position are 1) Generally, having far more time to consider the position (unless you've taken on an excessive gameload, or have let things slide a bit), (2) being able to choose, up to a point, when to play a move (i.e. not when too tired or under the weather etc. - this is clearly related to (1)), and (3) being allowed to research using books and databases (but not engines!!). So far, so obvious.
Yet I for one am guilty of often not making use of these advantages. I often move when i'm hopelessly tired after a long day, and at times like this often move without adequate study of the position, and without doing required research, even when i have easy access to resources such as books and databases. Sometimes I even play as if blitz conditions applied. I recently resigned a handful of games in which i got myself into difficulty for just these reasons. One major temptation is to keep playing moves in games that have a little green dot next to them.
SO, I am going to make an effort to only make moves after carrying out 'due diligence' so to speak. I hope this will have a positive effect on my rating.

Yes, I can look at the games, and plan ahead, and such, but no moves, none at all.
This saves me from the worst blunders.
This is an advantage in CC compared of OTB.
You mention engines , now would it be cheating to use an engine to research a position , in the sense of setting it up and playing it out against an engine. Perhaps even several times trying different moves. I am not saying ask the engine to analyze and suggest , just play as it normally would say on friend mode , just so you can see what may or may not happen?

If you are in a game with a certain position, you don't load and research that position. You play the position on your own and only after the game is completed can you start to load these existing positions to an engine.
Let's say you have not started a game yet, but want to toy with a new open.
You are able to load this opening and evaluate with engine all you like, but once the game is started you are no longer able to evaluate in this way.
Often you might evaluate new opens or positions, and once a game starts you'll find you've left the positions evaluated. Once the game starts, you are no longer allowed to load and evaluate the positions since the game is in progress.
