Good to see OTB chess back. Often have wee jokes at Giri but
here he plays a good game - and I have a new chess player who
has a four lettered surname for future blog crosswords.. yippee!

Giri talking about the above game.

https://tatasteelchess.com/video/anish-giri-post-round-1-interview/

Said he look at the Knight sac a long time ago and recalled the set up
with Kg2 and Rh3 from old analysis. This is what the top dogs do when
off board. They look at possible lines they may meet and work out variations.
Sometimes they might never see them, sometimes it may pop up the next day.

Still think it would have been harder for him to get through had Black gone 24...0-0-0...

...instead of 24 Kf7. The h8 Rook goes to h5, it's doing a job.
The h3 Rook cannot risk moving. It's stuck there.
White will have to sac back with possibly Nb3 Nxa5 ideas.
or Qb2,Bc3,Ne2 and Nxf4 plans. Interesting.
Wonder if we see this line again.

I remember a game between Michael Adams and Vishwananthan Anand in the Spanish, played about a decade ago, Anand won having remembered some analysis he'd done on the position a decade earlier. I sit at games trying to remember book lines I looked at a week earlier and can't...

Tata is finished. Van Forrest, with a last round win tied Giri for first with 8.5/13. Carlsen beat MVL, but still finished with 7.5 for 6th place, a major disaster for him. MLV had a horrible event, finished 2 from the bottom.

The two top spots to Dutchmen in the main Dutch chess tournament. Once upon a time - though, a long time ago - that would've meant no serious foreign players. I'm too much glass-half-empty to predict great glory and a world championship just from this, but it is a good sign at least. If only there had been more publicity for it nationally, this might have meant something for chess in my country.

@Shallow-Blue

It is certainly a remarkable result! I wonder if "home field" advantage is even greater during the pandemic. Maybe home cooked meals as opposed to plastic wrapped takeout every night makes a difference? Regardless, congrats to the Dutchmen!
