I've taught my 8 yr old sister how to play but she still cant figure out checkmate. she know's it is when the king is in and he cant move anywhere but that's about it. ive tried teaching her but my methods are kinda blunt and to the point. i dont know how to teach a young kid. she is really good though, she played in an unrated tournament against some older girls the other day(her first tourney) and she got 3rd out of 17 just by drawing EVERY game!!!! she even drew a game with a player rated just under 1000 nonprovisional, she was up a rook but she couldnt seal the deal! can you help me please!!!

I'm hoping it's how to checkmate. Go here:

And click on endgames. The rest of the site is helpful also.

I'm no teacher but I'd try by showing her some checkmate positions and letting her solve mate in 1 puzzles, then mate in 2 etc...
She can allready play so she must have some talent,I would think she'll figure it out soon enough 🙂
Originally posted by moon 111the girl that she played was rated about 975, she had already played in about 10 tournaments before she played my sister. she was 13 yrs old n my sister is 8 and has only been playing for about 6 months so it was a big thing for her to draw the game against her, but she had better position and was up a rook and she could have won...
am i missing something or is it just me?
because in my country rating it starts from 1350... because 1000 is a bit weird...

Where are the mods when you need them? 😕
And just to prove that I stiill have a sense of humour, here is Michael Boyd, self-styled chess teacher, coming 3rd in the U-14 section of a 2004 Ayrshire junior tournament. Nuff said. http://www.chessscotland.com/archives/stew2004.htm

This individual falsely accused me of using multiple accounts. People who live in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones.

EDIT- By the way, I don't have any issue with you calling out spammers. It was just that the date you joined didn't coincide with your knowledge of the site.
I've had some success in teaching the concept of how to checkmate (teaching 8-year-olds) by having the class build checkmates with a limited amount of pieces. I give them say two rooks, and I ask them to find places for the pieces that put the king in checkmate. I may do this with several combonations of pieces, so the students get an idea about what the checkmate looks like. Then I advance the exersise to leagally moving the pieces into the checkmates they built, or into similar checkmates. Once I even set this up as a simul with me moving the kings and them trying to checkmate me. The kids like it when the teacher takes an active role.
Good luck with teaching your sister. The checkmate is the hardest concept to learn, and it is one that I usually try starting with before talking about anything else.
