I'm helping out an 1100-1200 player at chess but I'm not sure what kind of puzzles to give him. Also, I want to explain the different motifs to him, but I'm not sure how the 1200 mind "works".

Thanks

Start with one and two movers with various motifs (knight forks, pins, etc.) Then move on to a little deeper and so on. 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices And Combinations By Fred Reinfeld has all the tactics done in this way. (Chapter 1 is Pins etc.) After he masters them like that, then mix them up. I'd try that first. Then go to three movers and so on. Don't go too fast though.

Oddly enough, a lot of those miniatures on the other forum do have some nice tactics. 🙂
