What book would you reccamend to a person who is interested in chess but a little insecure and curious to learn theory?

Depends on what the person's level of experience is. For a beginner/relative newcomer, I would recommend D. Brine Pritchard's The Right Way to Play Chess.

I haven't read either of these books, but have both on order at Barnes and Noble right now. Everybody recommends these two books.
Logical Chess: Move by Move by Irving Chernev
The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings by Ruben Fine

I haven't read Chernev's book either, but I think Fine's book is excellent (especially for an intermediate player like me). OTOH, a lot of RHP members have also recommended Gabor Kallai's Basic Chess Openings and More Basic Chess Openings.
