Ive been discussing with a few close friends of mine who love this game what is truly the Best opening in anybodies opinion in Chess to open with often. I've always believed the english opening which is of course c2-c4 starting because normally my opp. Will come right up the board with QueenPawn E7-E6 most of the time opening the Queens Gambit, which is not a bad move to make to prepare for the line of fire Black will soon be facing althrough one of my friends, Thinks the Grob opening which is G2 to G4 but is common to unorthodox players which he is, My other friend thinks the Mieses Opening is by far the best KingPawn E2 to E3. What does everyone think what is your favourite open and what do you normally use to open up a game agaiinst a very strong opp. Also my fave Defense is by far the Sicilian.

Thanks for the Replies everyone 🙂

Now that is a smart player 🙂 Yes I also think the Ruy Lopez is an awesome opening, I also prefer the 3 knights game which is the same exact two moves as the Ruy Lopez but instead of moving the white bishop to threaten blacks knight you move your b Knight out to threaten the Center Pawn. Awesome Opening game either way!

King's (knight's) gambit is the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Get a beginner to intermediate book which explains a few different openings like the French, CaroKan, Sicilian, Ruy Lopez etc etc

I usually play 1.e4 or 1.c4... although I hear 1.e4 is probably one of the best, yet it depends entirely on the experience of your opponent.

The best opening is the one that suits your style.

It will differ considerably depending on whether you prefer open tactical play or closed strategic play.

I prefer the former hence Kings Gambit, Morra Gambit, Ruy Lopez Open, 2 Knights, etc and I get frustrated when faced with the latter and can then be prone to blundering trying to force something (not there) out of frustration.

I like Ruy Lopez open variation, from either side of the board.

There is no such thing as 'a best opening' in chess. It does not exist and never will exist! The best for each individual player however is the one which the player feels most comfortable and confident with.A complete understanding of such an opening will provide that confidence and comfort and make the playing of such an opening more enjoyable and rewarding.

I suppose from a purely statistical point of view though, the Ruy Lopez is best for white & the Sicilian is best for black.
