Been 10 years since I’ve been doing the bloggy thingy. I have spent
a few days re-reading (and groaning) at some of the stuff I’ve written.
This was one of the first, (I’ve re-jigged it a bit to tidy it up)
***The Eternal Dilemma***
You wake up, you toss the mail in the garbage, feed the cats, wash,
have a cup of coffee, turn on the radio, hear some bright cheerful
giffnit blabbering away, turn off the radio and log onto to RHP for
the chess fix. So far the day has been good. Everything is perfect.
Then you see the Skull.
Your opponent has not made a move in the required time, I can claim the game.
Do I crunch the skull, do I leave it uncrunched or do I log off and think about it?
(I hate having to make decisions after I’ve fed the cats.)
Whole threads are dedicated to this very subject with the camps being split
50/50. Claim the game. If he had left his Queen hanging we would all take it.
It’s part of the rules, he agreed to the time control when he accept the game.
PM him and tell him to make a move. It’s the decent thing to do.
Refuse the skull and walk in the sunshine with your head held high.
I crunched the skull. (the system should then play a brief tune of your choice.)
This predicament is most unfair. Why can’t RHP make the decision for you. If the
process was automatic I would not be staring at my screen brooding on what to do.
I get enough of that looking at my games. At least the mess I’m in my games
is my own doing. This skull crunching decision has been thrust upon me.

Hi irish-eyes,
I did not know such a word existed, I made it up.
(or apparently I didn't, someone else.)
At the time that was written (2010) there was a hot debate going on about
taking skulls. When I started the idea was to be take a hot thread, discuss it,
give a game or two. Took about a year and a bit to find the standard format.
Joke, puzzle, instructive bit, mad cap RHP game. Sometimes that was the pattern,
sometimes not. All depended what was about. But that was the template.
Next year will change the format. Have too. No idea what...
..maybe I'll put the instructive bit first. 😀
@greenpawn34 saidThere's an easy way out of your dilemma.

Have your filter set on games awaiting my move.
That way, you never get to see skulls until you want to transfer games into an archive.
My philosophy for what it's worth is I look at my opponents profile.
If he says I will take skulls I do the same.If not I leave it alone(assuming I've actually seen it)unless it's critical to a clan challenge.
I agree that there skulls should be activated automatically after a certain period as in tournaments
