what is a "candidate master?"

In the United States Chess Federation Correspondence Section a "Candidate Master" has a rating greater than 2000 or less than 2200. Once earned it cannot be lost.

Different organizations that rate chess players use different terms. In some places this group of players are referred to as "Expert".
