I'm pretty sure there's TONS of theory.

oh yes. i dont know why but all of my defenses have to do with openings that are the most complicated. i just find them fun and interesting rather than just boring with whoever gains the advantage wins in the endgame. i like wars.

Do you like reading 300 page books about one opening?

i dont mind that much. i spent 3 months studing an openings book. i have studied so many hours on the sicilian and i understand it better that i dont mind studying more because it will help my rating go up ne ways. i have read 5 books this year and with all the progress i have made i can stand to read some more.

I've been playing the Meran about a year, and I like my results so far.

how did you learn about it?

I have the book by Pederson, and love the defense! I have been playing it for a while with really good results. It seems to me that alot of players around my rating play 1. d4 to avoid alot of theory so no one actually plays the critical responses to the Meran, which normally means I just get a great position with active pieces.

my favorite opening as black is the sicilian but so much theory makes it hard for me to make my breaks such as d4. the meran allows me to get a good position as well and win in the endgame. i feel very comftorable with it after understanding it a little bit better than when i saw it in a database.

I've never heard of this system, how does it go? I've just been reading a book on the kings indian defence and am finding that much to my liking against d4.
