A picture of an outdoor chessboard in Haddington (Scotland)
This week’s blog has two entertaining and instructive
games with the Mieses variation of the Scotch Game.
There were originally three puzzles but they are too easy so I added
a fourth and an advert claiming cigarettes are good for your health.
Stakhovich - Gechler, 1955 (White to play)
Ivanov - Kutuev, 1964 (Black to play)
Bruchner, 1948 (White to play and mate in two moves.)
You have had it too easy try this set by Goldberg in 1931 (White to play and win)

@greenpawn34 saidHaddington is a beautiful town. I like that stone bridge. Many of my ancestors were from Scotland. (I wish they had stayed there)

HI mchill,
What is good is that outdoor board and benches have been there since 2018 and
no sign at all of vandalism which is unlike quite a lot of these outdoor boards all
over the country.
Haddington is expanding in all directions. 1,000's yes 1,000's of houses have been
built all around it in the last 10 years. The centre of the quaint village has remained
untouched but it is no longer a village. It has a vast shopping centre just on the
edge of it and the building is still going on. Another 10 years of this and it will be a
major city.

I can totally relate. We had a beautiful oversized wooden set on an inlaid board in the floor of a nearby shopping mall; pieces were about knee high. 2 kids about 5 years old were kicking the pieces around the floor, while their idiot mother stood close by, blissfully talking on her cellphone, oblivious to what her little urchins were destroying. I had to turn away and leave - filled with the urge to blowtorch all 3 of them! 😠
