Can anyone give me the name of an Indian grandmaster who played some brilliant games but was almost totally ignorant of opening theory? I think he was around early last century.

Erm... "almost totally ignorant of opening theory"; "I think he was around early last century" - doesn't quite sound like Anand (who is the current World Champion).
