FICS has its issues too, but is better in general, as a chess interface. Don't use the browser "jin" interface but a customized Babaschess that works properly. Takes a lot of "getting used to" though. After four and a half years I still don't understand anything of it. (I guess I'm not geeky enough)
ICC seems sexy with the "play on ICC - where the grandmasters play" but the Dasher interface isn't all too hot either (I have only played 2 games there)

takes a little time to get used to dasher after babas. but I do prefer it nowadays by far. and you could always use the blitzin instead, it's much more like babaschess.

Sounds like you know more about it than Heinz so you get a rec too.
I think ICC is pretty fun. I've been lurking there ever since Ajedrez21 got hacked some five or even more years ago and we all got transferred for free.
Aside from being able to play pretty much anyone of any strength it also made something inexplicable happen. I made friendships there! That's outrageous.
Giving random simuls is fun. 5-minute chess is a ton of fun. And if you are lower rated the tournaments will probably keep you pretty busy.
There's championships of different time controls every second month, tourneys that give out free sub time, and crap like that.
But generally I just like it because it's that much easier to find people to chat and have fun with. I've been considering giving up correspondence entirely just because of ICC.
Edit: Oh an Dasher is pretty easy after you get used to it. And quite nice for a program written in java. Just don't try to give a simul from it. That's where BlitzIn shines.
